The matrix number is etched or stamped into the runout groove of the disc. It is a combination of letters and numbers (occasionally other symbols) and, depending on the manufacturer, may consist of a prefix, the record's serial number, and a suffix. The prefix and suffix often contain information about the factory where the record was pressed and the recording (take) that was used to make it, and thus represent important information about the manufacture of that record. The serial number is also regularly found on the record's label.

Die Matrizennummer wird in die Auslaufrille (den Spiegel) eingeätzt oder eingestempelt. Präfix und Suffix enthalten häufig Angaben über das Werk, in dem die Schallplatte gepreßt wurde, und die Aufnahme (Take), die dafür verwendet wurde, und stellen damit wichtige Informationen über die Herstellung dieser Schallplatte dar. Die Seriennummer findet sich regelmäßig auch auf dem Etikett der Schallplatte wieder.

マトリックス番号は、ランアウトにエッチングまたは刻印されています。アルファベットと数字（時にはその他の記号）の組み合わせで、メーカーによっては、プレフィックス、レコードのシリアルナンバー、サフィックスで構成されています。このプレフィックスとサフィックスには、そのレコードがプレスされた工場や、そのレコードに使われた録音（テイク）の情報が含まれていることが多く、そのレコードの製造に関する重要な情報を表している。シリアルナンバーはレコードのラベルにも記載されています。
